The study and application of health systems management and leadership in health have become an essential element to managing health care organisations successfully and professionally. Health care systems and organisations are extremely complex to manage and operate and require highly skilled and trained professionals in the many areas of health management.
Management and leadership are both important for the delivery of effective, high quality, and personcentred health services. The often fast, dramatic and disruptive changes in health care requires effective managers, as well as informed, innovative leaders, so as to help identify and implement ways to promote sustainable health care access and affordability, while ensuring delivery of safe and needed care. Health care managers focus on setting, measuring and achieving goals. They control situations to reach or exceed their objectives. Managers focus on the structures necessary to set and achieve goals. Health systems' leaders, on the other hand, have the vision of what can be achieved and then communicate this to others, leading to the development of strategies for realizing the vision. Health care leaders build relationships with stakeholders, and motivate people. They are able to negotiate for resources and other support so as to achieve their goals.
